The NX1 alternative to Tabliss
Tabliss turns the new tab into a stage you arrange yourself: a background from millions of photos, plus whichever widgets you want — clock, weather, greeting, notes, search. Open source, ad-free and, by its own account, entirely without paywalls. That is a clear position, and Tabliss holds it consistently.
NX1 shares that position on accounts and goes further on content. The page does not stay empty: every topic gets its own start page with curated tiles, its own news feed, its own search and live widgets showing real numbers — tables, prices, server status, player counts.

The same stance on accounts
Changing your new tab should not require signing up — both agree on that. NX1 therefore handles device sync with a pairing code: a QR code or eight characters connect your computer and your phone directly, with no registration, no password and no address. If you do not need the sync, leave it off and everything stays local.
Content is the difference
With Tabliss the tab shows what you put there. With NX1 each start page brings its topic along: the tiles that belong to it, a news feed drawn from exactly those sources, a search across the matching sites and widgets with running data. A start page for any topic is built by AI from its name — typing "FC Bayern München" is enough.
Fair is fair: where Tabliss remains the better choice
Tabliss is open source and NX1 is not — if reading or changing the code yourself matters to you, you will not find that here. Tabliss also runs as a real extension in Firefox, where NX1 is only available as a web app. And if you deliberately want the empty tab because content distracts you while working, a stage with no programme simply serves you better.
Frequently asked questions
Is NX1 open source like Tabliss?
No, the NX1 source code is not public. What happens to your data is in the privacy policy instead: the optional personalization reads bookmarks and history on your device, and only anonymized domain and keyword patterns ever leave the browser — never full URLs. If auditability matters more to you than ready-made content, Tabliss is the right pick.
Can I bring my existing browser bookmarks?
Yes. On first run NX1 offers a 1:1 import of your browser bookmarks — they show up as tiles and can be reordered or moved into start pages afterwards.
Is NX1 free?
Yes. NX1 is free and works without an account; device sync uses a pairing code instead of a login.
Does NX1 work in Firefox or Safari?
As an extension NX1 runs in Chromium browsers (Chrome, Edge, Brave, Opera). In Firefox, Safari and on mobile you use NX1 as a web app at start.nx1-app.com.
