The NX1 alternative to Bonjourr

Bonjourr is the tidiest start page in this field: a photo that shifts with the time of day, a clock, a few quick links — the page does not want to be more than that. It is open source, by its own account needs no sign-in, runs in Safari alongside Chrome and Firefox, allows custom CSS, and lists "no generative AI" as a feature.

NX1 can do that calm as well — the Start page can be reduced to image, clock and tiles, and Zen mode hides even those. The difference is what becomes possible when you want more: start pages per topic, with news and live widgets that belong to that topic.

Two honest positions on AI

Bonjourr names the absence of generative AI as a feature, not a gap — that is a position, and it has good reasons behind it. NX1 decided differently: the AI builds a complete start page from a name, with tiles, searches and sources, and the optional personalization reads bookmarks and history on the device. If you want neither, switch the personalization off and build your areas by hand — the AI is an offer, not a prerequisite.

Custom CSS: ours stays on the device

Both allow custom CSS, but NX1 treats it more strictly — for a reason. In NX1 areas travel between people: you share a start page and strangers install it. Free CSS inside a shared area would mean someone could restyle another person’s page, and combined with a tile from the same package that could build a convincing fake system dialog. So the CSS lives on the device and never travels with a shared area. What can be passed on is colour values from a closed schema, nothing more.

Fair is fair: where Bonjourr remains the better choice

Bonjourr is open source and runs as an extension in Safari, where NX1 can only offer the web app. It is also the more consistent answer if the new tab really should do nothing but look good: if you want neither news nor live data, NX1 leaves you carrying features you switch off. And custom CSS is available there without a paid tier.

Frequently asked questions

Is there an NX1 extension for Safari?

Not as an extension. In Safari, Firefox and on mobile you use NX1 as a web app at start.nx1-app.com — the same interface, just not on the new tab. On a phone each start page can additionally be added to the home screen as its own app.

Can I make NX1 as calm as Bonjourr?

Yes. Widgets and the news feed can be hidden per start page, leaving only the background, the clock and your tiles. Zen mode goes further and reduces the page to clock and greeting — on a schedule if you like, with calm sounds and a quote of the day.

Can I bring my existing browser bookmarks?

Yes. On first run NX1 offers a 1:1 import of your browser bookmarks — they show up as tiles and can be reordered or moved into start pages afterwards.

Is NX1 free?

Yes. NX1 is free and works without an account; device sync uses a pairing code instead of a login.

Does NX1 work in Firefox or Safari?

As an extension NX1 runs in Chromium browsers (Chrome, Edge, Brave, Opera). In Firefox, Safari and on mobile you use NX1 as a web app at start.nx1-app.com.
